Here at What’s Bugging You? Pest Control, we’ve encountered quite a few pest control myths we'd like to debunk.

A Clean Home Won’t Attract Bugs

Perhaps the biggest myth out there is that only dirty homes attract bugs. While good housekeeping does prevent pests, it does not guarantee that you won’t encounter them. Sometimes, insects such as spiders, centipedes, and silverfish show up even in the cleanest of homes. Often, that’s because your neighbor has had a pest control problem that has migrated to your residence. In fact, there are an estimated 60 plus spiders in your house as you are reading this. In other cases, there could be seemingly no explanation for it at all. As pest control professionals, we know that nearly everyone will experience a problem with pests at least once during their lifetime.

Pest Control is Only Needed Seasonally

Many people believe that pest control is something that is only needed seasonally. Despite the cold winters we experience here in Michigan, our clients are in need of services year-round. Some insects such as flies, and grasshoppers may begin migrating indoors once the weather starts getting colder, and rats and mice love to call your house their winter vacation home. Due to the influx of activity during fall and winter, we offer various pest control plans to cover you throughout the year.

If I Don’t See Insects, I Don’t Have A Problem

Just because you don’t see any bugs does not mean you do not have a pest control problem. Some insects are nocturnal and only come out at night. A few such creatures include beetles, moths, flies, and even some net-winged insects. So maybe the reason you do not see these bugs is that they are most active while you are asleep. Others tend to live in tight, dark places.

You may see signs of activity even though you do not see the actual insects themselves. Some things you may notice include bug droppings, urine markings, a robust ammonia-like smell, mud tunnels, or track marks. You could also hear insects moving inside your walls, or notice chewed paper and drywall damage. Wood-boring insects could even leave what appears to be sawdust.

DIY Pest Control Methods Are Not Very Effective

People often turn to home remedies because they fear that commercial pest treatments are too expensive. DIY forms of pest control are not always effective and could wind up costing you more money in the long run. This includes deterrents such as ultrasonic repellers, mothballs, essential oils, or other methods that are designed to extricate pests rather than kill them. In addition, some insects have developed a tolerance to over-the-counter pest control products and are virtually unphased by their application.

By using an ineffective remedy, you are actually allowing your pest control problem to grow. Rather than taking matters into your own hands, contact our team instead.
