Rodents are among the most common pests that challenge homeowners. Rats and mice are the usual suspects of infestations and they are often the hardest to deal with. These creatures may seem adorable to some, but the damage they cause is no laughing matter. Rats and mice can reorient their bones, allowing them to fit into even the tiniest of places. This makes them hard to find and even harder to get rid of.

There are 56 known species of rats and all of them are reasonably intelligent. In fact, they are known to solve problems as quickly as your typical pet dog. So, when homeowners attempt to eliminate them, they quickly adapt and find a way around your traps. Rats are also highly social creatures. They would love nothing more than to start a family in your home. To make things worse, rats can start a new reproduction cycle every three weeks. Each reproduction cycle can yield up to ten babies. Once they get out of control, you will have dozens of uninvited guests running around your house in no time.

If left unchecked, rats and mice can transmit potentially harmful diseases to you and your family. These are some that they could be carrying into your home:

Hantavirus - You can contract hantavirus by coming into contact with an infected animal, or by inhaling its urine or fecal particles. If you have hantavirus, you are likely to get a fever, experience severe muscle aches and feel fatigued for up to five weeks.

Plague - Plague is infamous for killing millions of Europeans in the Middle Ages. Although this disease can be treated today, a plague infection can result in several potentially deadly symptoms, including swollen lymph nodes, septicemia and pneumonia. Rats are carriers of the fleas which transmit the disease.

Tularemia - If you are bitten by an infected animal, consume contaminated food or water, or come into contact with an infected carcass, you may contract tularemia. The symptoms of a tularemia infection range from mildly dangerous to deadly.

Due to how common they are, rats and mice are among animals that cause the most allergic reactions, according to the National Library of Medicine. Their hair and dander can be spread throughout in very little time. Call an expert to take care of your rodent problem.

They Will Destroy Your Home

These creatures will use whatever they can find to make a nest. This includes fabrics, building materials, paper, and more. A rat’s teeth are incredibly strong, so you would be surprised at what they can tear up, they can even chew through concrete. If you have a population living in your house, you are likely to find holes in your drywall, missing insulation, and chewed up wires. Bare or frayed wires can ignite, causing a fire in your home. All the more reason you should hire a pest control service to keep them out for good.
