Yard Pests

Nothing beats a gorgeous Michigan summer. The landscaping blooms, the grass grows high, and the lakes start calling for you. However, with that comes a lot of yard pests. Mosquitoes are the dreaded “unwanted guest” of Midwest barbecues, and summer is their time to breed, annoy, and bite.

More than just an annoyance, these insects can cause significant health risks. A recent poll from Mott Children’s Hospital reports that parents are becoming very concerned about mosquito-borne illnesses. What seems like a benign itchy bite can actually carry Eastern Equine Encephalitis and viruses such as West Nile, both of which can cause severe health issues.

For the past few summers, more people are discovering ticks are a big problem in Southeast Michigan. Parents are finding that children come in with ticks attached to them after just playing in their backyard or a neighborhood park. It’s well-known that ticks can carry Lyme disease. It’s also been noted by the same Mott poll that parents don’t even think of spraying bug repellents in the back yard. They incorrectly assume the problems arise in the woods or near large bodies of water.

Fleas, most commonly carried by household pets, are also an issue in the summer. Studies have shown that flea pupae can survive even in the Detroit winter. They nestle in your pet and infest areas of your home. This is especially disturbing in those months when our pets spend most of their time indoors. Again, the critical thing to do is to find ways to eradicate these pests at the source.

As parents, we think covering our kids in bug spray is enough. While products with DEET have been approved for kids when applied according to the directions, there are some drawbacks. At a time when we are eager to take kids to the back yard to escape the monotony of being inside, these products should not be applied when the skin is broken or sunburned, and the mouth and eyes should not be touched. Good luck with those things when it comes to kids. The better choice is to find a reliable way to remove these pests from the source, your yard. Hiring a professional company, especially one with local roots that know the Detroit pest problem in and out, is a choice you will not regret.
