St Clair Shores

The Economists were right, human wants are indeed insatiable, and it's ok to want a bit of everything. St. Clair Shores may be the closest thing you can find to 'a city with a touch of everything.' As the name implies, it is located along the shores of Lake St. Clair. Although it was only incorporated in 1951 (after a majority vote by residents), the city had existed long before then. Before its incorporation, it was recognized as the largest village in the United States.

The French were some of the first settlers here as far back as 1710, and along with German immigrants, mainly populated the area. Many of the current residents still have these ancestral surnames. Walking through the city, you will find many of the residential streets named similarly. That is some survival of history. Before the 1950s, St. Clair Shores was a popular recreation center and was the location for Jefferson Beach Amusement Park, which housed the longest roller coaster in the country. Unfortunately, it was destroyed by fire along with many other buildings.

Today, the city remains a favorite in Michigan, and runs some great programs. St. Clair Shores is home to the most significant and longest-running preliminary pageant for the Miss America Organization in Michigan. It's also one of the longest-running in the country. Young women aged 17-24 still benefit from the scholarships offered by the Miss St. Clair Shores' program. The city also hosts one of the most significant and continuous Memorial Day celebrations in the Midwestern United States. With an annual attendance of close to 100,000 spectators, it is also one of the most attended.

The scenery of the city is beautiful, with 14 miles of canals found in the Nautical Mile. The city has a wonderful municipal park system, so there's plenty of fun places to hang out with friends and family. Having once held the moniker of 'Hockeytown USA,' youth hockey is still very popular here, especially in it's three public schools. They dominated high school hockey in the 70s, with a famous 31-0 unbeaten run in 1975 by the Lakeview High School Hockey Team.
